no segundo caderno do globo, tem sempre um trechinho sobre os artigos públicados nesse dia 50 anos atrás.  e no 11 de fevereiro de 1961, teve essa grande previsão:

O BRASIL E O EQUADOR SERVIRIAM DE TRAPOLIM PARA QUE FIDEL CASTRO DOMINASSE O CONTINENTE

...o que, obviamente, foi exatamente o que aconteceu.  deve ser justamente por isso que sarney continua na presidência do senado.

interessante, porém, é o globo reproduzir a manchete mas fazer de conta que não está lá:  nos resumos dos artigos antigos, fala-se de bailes e blocos do carnaval daquele ano e de visitantes estrangeiros, mas nenhuma tentativa de lembrar a histéria produzida e manipulada em grande parte pela família marinho, o que tanto ajudou na instalação de um regime sangrento e anti-democrático. 

amanhã, com certeza, o globo celebrará a queda do hosni mubarak (a veja não, pois está contra qualquer movimento que não seja regido pelas elites do primeiro mundo).  mas será muito interessante ver o globo continuar a brincar com sua própria história enquanto o dia 31 de março de 2014 se aproxime.

in the arts and living section of the globo newspaper, there's always a clipping from articles published on this date 50 years ago.  on february 11, 1961, there was this great prediction:

BRASIL AND ECUADOR WILL SERVE AS TRAMPOLINES FOR FIDEL CASTRO TO DOMINATE THE CONTINENT

…which obviously is exactly what happened.  that must be the reason that josé sarney (one of the junta’s favorites, and the first “civilian” president at the end of the dictatorship) is still president of the senate.

what’s really interesting, though, is seeing globo reproduce the headlines while pretending that they aren’t there. the summaries of the old articles mention carnaval balls and parades from 1961 and foreign visitors, but no attempt at remembering the hysteria produced and manipulated in large part by the marinho family (who control the globo newspaper and television channel, by far the largest in brasil) to help install a bloody, anti-democratic regime.

tomorrow, globo will commemorate the fall of hosni mubarak (veja magazine, the only major brasilian publication openly sympathetic to george w. bush, will not, because it is against any movement that isn’t controlled by first world elites).  but it will be very interesting to see globo continue to play with its own history while march 31, 2014 (the 50^th anniversary of the coup) approaches.
